Let’s talk about Miniature Boxers- the WHAT?! & the WHY?!

Hi! Hello!

If you’re here because someone mentioned a “Miniature Boxer,” you’re probably wondering if they’re real.

The answer is yes… and no.

The AKC does not recognize a Miniature Boxer as a separate breed. The dogs you see here are part of our carefully planned, multi-generation outcross program designed to preserve everything we love about the Boxer while working toward greater genetic diversity and improved long-term health.

Our goal isn’t to make “designer dogs.” Our goal is to build healthier Boxers for future generations.

Why We Chose a Different Path

We love the Boxer exactly as it is.

Unfortunately, today’s Boxer faces challenges that can’t be ignored. Decades of breeding within a closed studbook have steadily reduced genetic diversity while inherited diseases—including cancer, heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and neurological conditions—continue to affect far too many dogs.

We don’t believe pretending the problem doesn’t exist helps the breed we all love.

Our outcross program was created to responsibly introduce new genetic diversity while carefully preserving the Boxer temperament, structure, and unmistakable personality that make the breed so special. This isn't about replacing the Boxer; It's about being unwilling to accept a future without them.

No, we didn’t invent this idea. We joined a community of thoughtful breeders and researchers who were willing to ask difficult questions in pursuit of a healthier Boxer. Their willingness to share knowledge, celebrate successes, and openly discuss challenges has helped shape our own program, and for that we are sincerely grateful.

Special, heartfelt thanks to LSC Miniature Boxers & Convicted Boxers.

Why Are They Smaller?

Our foundation dogs include carefully selected Boston Terrier lines introduced several generations back.

As each generation is bred back toward Boxer, the dogs become increasingly Boxer in appearance and temperament while retaining valuable genetic diversity.

Adult size currently ranges from approximately 35–55 pounds, depending on generation and individual genetics.

What Are They Like?

Everything you expect from a Boxer…

  • Silly and affectionate
  • Loyal and people-oriented
  • Athletic and playful
  • Great family companions
  • Velcro dogs that love being involved in everything

If you’ve owned a Boxer before, you’ll feel right at home.

We extensively socialize our puppies including exposure to cats, ducks, dogs that love them and dogs that don’t! We focus on confidence building and decision making; we teach them how to learn and how to think for themselves.

Each puppy goes home with:

✔ Age-appropriate vaccinations

✔ Deworming schedule completed

✔ Veterinary examination

✔ Health guarantee

✔ Lifetime breeder support

I f you’re looking for a dog with the heart, personality, and clownish spirit of a Boxer in a slightly smaller package, one of our puppies may be a great fit.

Okay, okay! Talk About the Purple Polka-Dotted Elephant in the Room…

Yes… some of our dogs have colors and patterns you won’t find in the traditional Boxer breed standard.

And that’s okay.

Our program isn’t focused on the show ring. It’s focused on creating healthy, well-tempered companions through carefully planned outcrossing and responsible selection.

Many of these colors were introduced through our foundation breeds and are simply part of the genetics that came along with increasing diversity. Color has never been our breeding goal—it just happens to come along for the ride. You can see that we produce a mix of traditional boxer coats and the unique.  Some people love it, some hate it, and that's okay, too!

In the big picture where we are juggling so many pieces such as Coefficient of Inbreeding, Boxer percentage, health testing, temperament, structure, and more… well, the color is the easiest to tweak later on. For now we will lean into it, because my blue eyed girl River is a conversation starter when people see her- she has that WOW! factor that opens up the opportunity for education and outreach about the plight of the modern boxer. And THAT is where my passion lives. As long as every conversation is had with respect, I'm always open to discussion and learning.
